Week 8 of my final uni semester called for a serious feed. Since Sam couldn’t make it this week, I visited Drumplings (yes, with the ‘r’) with my friend Ashlea to suss out their dumplings. Specifically, their elusive (and exclusive) cheeseburger dumplings.
You read that right: cheeseburger dumplings. What is a cheeseburger dumpling? What does it look like? Does it really taste like a burger? I had so many questions.
Well, strap ya’selves in because today we are jumping into a bite-sized, mini review.
One thing I loved about Drumplings was their obvious effort to include everyone that might want to dine there. I’m talking vegan options, I’m talking gluten-free options, I’m talking paleo options, I’m talking… okay, so that’s all the options, but that’s a lot of options!
These are the cheeseburger dumplings. They look pretty normal, right? But as you take a bite, the delicious beef mince hits your tongue, along with a distinct American cheese, mustard and diced pickles. These dumplings absolutely go off (I’m not kidding, it’s a party inside your mouth). It really does taste like a cheeseburger in a dumpling size, and I was left shocked as to how the talented chefs even managed to achieve this. I was SHOOK.
Something I will say, however, is that the dumpling wrappers are quite sticky and it’s pretty easy to butcher your dumplings. You might want to finesse your chopstick abilities before visiting.
The only real downside to Drumplings is the pricing – it’s $12 for 5 cheeseburger dumplings. While I’m sure they do great traditional dumplings, with Chinatown quite literally around the corner, it’s probably not worth eating there if you are only looking for traditional Asian-style stuff.
But honestly, if you’re heading there for something out-of-the-ordinary, weird, special, intriguing, and oh-so-Melbourne, then I would highly recommend it. I will definitely be going back with Sam to get my hands (and chopsticks) on these babies again!
Drumplings is an awesome place to visit for inventive dumplings, great service and an all round good time for everyone! It scores a 4.5/5 from me.
Psst… They even offer students a 10% discount if you bring your student ID! So what are you waiting for? Let the dumpling feast begin!
Drumplings is open from 11am daily.
